For fashion designer Rachel Gilbert’s her first – and so, brand-defining – Sydney store, we envisaged a space that would on the one hand mark her apart fromthe other boutiques clustered around Sydney’s fashionable Glenmore Road/Oxford Street junction, but also form a shape-shifting showcase for her constantly evolving collections. Vibrant colour ways being one of Gilbert’s hallmarks, we opted for a subdued, predominantly neutral backdrop that utilises raw, textured materials to provide a foil and a context for the clothing. Simple, understated, timeless in a retail sector that thrives on constant change, reflective surfaces alternate with matte finishes to seduce the customer to a certain point, but then stand back and let the garments – often, quite literally – shine.
